What Is Claude Cowork? Features, Skills and 10 Use Cases (2026)

Quick answer: Claude Cowork is an agent in the Claude desktop app that works on your files and apps to finish multi-step tasks for you.

Skills and plugins customise it, with ready-made plugins for sales, finance, legal and marketing.

Claude Cowork is built for knowledge work rather than coding. You describe an outcome, Claude plans the steps, works through them in your files and connected apps, and returns finished work.

This guide explains what Cowork is, how skills and plugins fit in, and ten use cases to try first.

What is Claude Cowork?

Cowork is an agentic mode inside the Claude desktop app, sitting alongside chat and Claude Code. It was announced in January 2026 and became generally available on April 9, 2026.

Unlike a chat reply, a Cowork task can run for an extended time. You can watch its progress, or step away and come back when it finishes.

It needs a paid Claude plan: Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise. For how it compares with OpenAI's equivalent, read Claude Cowork vs ChatGPT Work.

How skills work in Cowork

A skill is a folder of instructions that teaches Claude a repeatable task. Cowork loads one automatically when your request matches its description.

Cowork includes built-in skills for common document, spreadsheet and presentation work. You can add custom skills for tasks you repeat, such as "always format our weekly report this way".

The file format is the standard one. Learn it in what Claude skills are, and see the SKILL.md guide.

Skills, connectors and plugins

Cowork has three ways to extend what Claude can do.

ExtensionWhat it isUse it when
SkillInstructions for a repeatable taskYou want the same method every time
ConnectorA link to an outside app or data sourceThe information lives outside your folder
PluginA bundle of skills, connectors, slash commands and sub-agentsYou want a ready-made setup for a role

Connectors you set up in regular Claude chat also work in Cowork. Start with the one source a task needs, and add more only when you need them.

Ready-made plugins

Anthropic publishes plugins for roles such as sales, finance, legal and marketing. Each bundles the skills, connectors and commands that role uses most.

To add one, open the Cowork tab in the Claude desktop app, choose Plugins in the sidebar, then browse and install. Anthropic also offers a plugin that helps you build your own.

10 Claude Cowork use cases

1. Organise a messy folder

Point Cowork at a folder and ask it to sort files into sensible subfolders and rename them consistently. Review the plan before it moves anything.

2. Draft and edit documents

Ask for a first draft of a report, proposal or policy, then refine it in follow-ups. The Docx skill covers Word files, including tracked changes and comments.

3. Build and clean spreadsheets

Give it a raw export and ask for a cleaned table, a summary or a chart. The Data Analysis skill adds a repeatable analysis routine.

4. Turn notes into a presentation

Share rough notes and ask for a slide outline, then a deck. Cowork can also work with Claude's PowerPoint tool for the finishing touches.

5. Research and summarise

Collect sources into a folder and ask for a summary with the key points and open questions. For long investigations, try the Deep Research skill.

6. Produce a weekly report

Save last week's files, say what you want to track, and ask for a draft report in your format. A custom skill keeps the format identical each week.

7. Manage your inbox and calendar

With connectors, Cowork can help sort mail and prepare for meetings. Our Gmail Workflows and Calendar Automation skills show common routines.

8. Plan marketing work

Ask for a content plan, an SEO review or a campaign outline. The Marketing Plan and SEO Audit skills give structure.

9. Use a role plugin

Install the plugin for your function, such as sales or finance, and ask for its common workflows. It is the quickest way to get a tuned setup without writing anything.

10. Build a skill for your team

Turn a task your team repeats into a skill, so everyone gets the same result. Start with the safety checklist if you share skills with others.

Tips for getting good results

  • Give the outcome and the format: say what you want and how it should look.
  • Share only what is needed: grant access to the folders and apps a task requires.
  • Review before you trust it: check numbers, names and anything that goes to a client.
  • Add instructions once: put preferences in global or folder instructions instead of repeating them.
  • Watch your usage: Cowork tasks draw on your Claude usage, which you can monitor in settings.

Limits to know about

  • Review is your job. Cowork can produce confident but wrong results.
  • Access is the price. Anything you connect or open is data the agent can touch.
  • Plans change. Features and limits shift often, so check Anthropic's help pages.

Skills uploaded in one Claude surface do not always appear in another, so check where your skill is installed.
