5 Free Certifications for Your Resume in 2026: What's Really Free
Quick answer: Only two of these five are fully free: IBM SkillsBuild and HubSpot Academy.
GitHub Foundations is free for students and $49 for everyone else. Google AI Essentials costs about $49, and cloud architect exams cost $150 to $300.
Lists of "5 free certificates for your resume" are everywhere, and they are often only partly true. A course can be free while the certificate costs money, or the training can be free while the exam is not.
We checked five commonly shared picks against current pricing and found what is really free.

How we checked
We compared each provider's own pages with independent pricing guides. We looked for three things: what the course costs, what the certificate or exam costs, and whether it is free for everyone.
We did not complete these courses ourselves. Where sources disagreed, we say so.
The 5 certifications, checked one by one
1. Google AI Essentials
Verdict: partly free.
Google AI Essentials is a short beginner course on Coursera, taking under ten hours, with no coding. The learning can be tried free, but the Google certificate needs a paid subscription.
What it costs: about $49 a month in the US and Canada after a 7-day free trial. Pricing varies by country.
Heads-up: many articles still say you can audit it free. Coursera ended its free audit option in August 2025 and now offers a free first-module preview, a trial or financial aid.
Why it can still be worth it: most people finish within one month, so the real cost is about one month's fee. If you only want the knowledge, Google Skills offers free AI courses with free badges.

2. IBM SkillsBuild
Verdict: free.
IBM SkillsBuild offers free online learning in technology and professional skills, with more than 1,000 courses. Learning paths cover AI, cybersecurity, data, cloud and digital marketing.
What it costs: $0, with no course fee.
What you get: shareable digital credentials and badges issued through Credly. IBM uses several terms, so what you earn may be called a digital credential, a badge or a certificate depending on the programme.
Heads-up: some bootcamp-style programmes run through partners and have their own registration rules. Check whether a path ends in a credential before you start.

3. GitHub Foundations (not "GitHub Data Foundations")
Verdict: free for students, $49 for everyone else.
The reel's name does not match an official certification. GitHub's real entry-level credential is GitHub Foundations (exam GH-900), which covers repositories, commits, branching, markdown and project management.
What it costs: GitHub's own registration page lists the exam at $49 USD. Some older guides still say $99.
How to get it free: verified students can take the exam free through GitHub Education, which attaches a one-time voucher to your exam account. Learning partners such as DataCamp also offer exam discounts.
Heads-up: list it by its official name, GitHub Foundations, so a recruiter can verify it.

4. HubSpot marketing certifications
Verdict: free.
HubSpot Academy offers free courses and certifications in inbound marketing, digital marketing, content marketing, email marketing, SEO and social media. You need a free HubSpot account, and each certification includes lessons, quizzes and an exam.
What it costs: $0, with no trial or subscription.
Time: a few hours for most certifications.
Why it made the list: it is one of the few widely recognised certifications that is free from start to finish.
Heads-up: the value depends on the role. It signals knowledge of inbound marketing and HubSpot's tools, not general marketing skill.

5. Cloud architect certification
Verdict: not free. The training can be, the exam is not.
"Cloud architect certification" is not one credential. AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft each have their own, and the exams cost real money.

What is free: study material. Google Skills, AWS digital training and Microsoft Learn all have free learning paths, and Google Skills offers free skill badges.
Heads-up: Microsoft sometimes gives free exam vouchers for the Azure Fundamentals exam through training events. Architect-level exams are not free.

How to list these on your resume
A certificate helps only if a recruiter can trust it.
- Use the official name: write "GitHub Foundations", not a nickname.
- Name the issuer: for Google AI Essentials, say it was earned through Coursera.
- Link the proof: add the Credly or certificate link on LinkedIn.
- Do not overstate: a completion badge is not an industry exam.
- Pair it with a project: one real project shows more than any badge.
