Claude Cowork vs ChatGPT Work (2026): Which AI Agent Is Better for Your Job?
Quick answer: Claude Cowork and ChatGPT Work do the same kind of job at the same price: about $20 a month for an individual.
Pick the one that comes with the subscription you already pay for, then pilot it for two weeks before you switch.
Claude Cowork and ChatGPT Work are AI agents that do multi-step office tasks for you, instead of only answering questions. You describe an outcome, the agent works through the steps, and you review the result.
This guide compares launch dates, pricing, limits and fit, and flags what to double-check.

How we compared them
We compared launch announcements, vendor pricing and independent reporting from mid-2026. We have not run side-by-side tasks ourselves, and we do not rank them on quality.
SkillDirectory lists skills mostly for Claude, so we have a natural interest in it. We stuck to documented facts and say where each product is the better fit.
What is Claude Cowork?
Cowork is an agent inside the Claude desktop app. It works with files on your computer, plans a task, carries it out and returns finished work.
It needs a paid plan: Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise. Cowork can also use Claude in Chrome, Excel and PowerPoint as tools, and it can be reached remotely from the Claude mobile app.
Reports add a Microsoft 365 connector for OneDrive and SharePoint.
What is ChatGPT Work?
ChatGPT Work is an agent in ChatGPT, built on Codex and the GPT-5.6 models. OpenAI launched it on July 9, 2026 with a redesigned desktop app that combines chat, Work and Codex.
It runs multi-step tasks across your connected apps, files and browser. It can produce documents, spreadsheets, slides, reports and web apps, and it supports Scheduled Tasks that repeat work.
OpenAI also launched Sites, a hosted publishing feature, in public beta alongside it.

At the individual level the price is effectively identical. Meaningful differences appear at team scale, where billing structures differ.
Usage limits: the part nobody explains
Neither vendor publishes a task count. Both meter usage by how complex the work is, so one big job can cost more than dozens of small ones.
- Shared allowance: on Claude, Cowork draws from the same pool as chat and Claude Code.
- Rolling windows: Anthropic resets limits on a rolling five-hour window, with weekly limits on paid plans.
- Team billing: OpenAI moved workspace agent runs on Business plans to token-based credits on July 6, 2026.
For a team, the agent billing model matters more than the seat price.
Where each one fits
Choose Claude Cowork if
- You already pay for Claude Pro or Max, because Cowork is included.
- Most of your work lives in files and folders on your computer.
- You want Claude Code and a work agent on one subscription.
- Your organisation prefers usage-based enterprise billing.
Choose ChatGPT Work if
- You already pay for ChatGPT Plus or Business.
- You want Scheduled Tasks and hosted Sites in the same product.
- Your team already uses ChatGPT's admin controls and integrations.
- You want Chat, Work and Codex in one desktop app.
For everyday office tasks both are capable. Published head-to-head results often reflect the reviewer's habits more than a real gap.
What neither one solves
Agent marketing skips three things.
- Review is still your job. A finished-looking spreadsheet can still hide errors you did not see being made.
- Access is the price. Agents need access to your files and apps, so grant the narrowest access that works.
- Everything is moving. Pricing, limits and platforms changed repeatedly in 2026, so re-check before you commit.
A two-week pilot beats any comparison
Run your real work through one agent before you decide.
- Pick five tasks you repeat, such as a weekly report or a slide deck.
- Run them through your current subscription's agent for two weeks.
- Note the time saved, how much you edited and how much of your allowance it used.
- Only then test the other agent on the same five tasks.
Skills that help your agent

- Data Analysis: analyse spreadsheet data.
- Calendar Automation: daily agendas and meeting prep.
- Gmail Workflows: organise attachments and invoices.

How much does ChatGPT Work cost?
It is included from ChatGPT Plus ($20 a month) upward, according to pricing comparisons checked against OpenAI's pages in July 2026. It is not on the Free or Go plans.
Is either one free?
No. Both need a paid subscription. Free plans include chat but not the agent.
Do I need both?
Almost certainly not. They cover the same core use case, so paying for two is hard to justify without a specific integration.
