Claude Code vs GitHub Copilot (2026): Which One Should You Use?

Quick answer: Choose GitHub Copilot if you work inside an editor and want completions, chat and pull-request review for $10 to $39 a month.

Choose Claude Code if you want to hand a whole task to an agent from a terminal or desktop app. Many developers use both.

"Claude vs GitHub" is not a strict either-or choice. GitHub Copilot lets you pick Claude models, and Claude Code can work on any Git repository.

This guide compares the two tools on pricing, workflow, models and team controls.

How we compared them

We compared published pricing, documented features and independent reporting. We have not run head-to-head coding benchmarks, and the article says so wherever it matters.

SkillDirectory lists skills mostly for Claude, so we have a natural interest in it. We compared on documented facts and say where Copilot is the better fit.

GitHub Copilot pricing in 2026

Copilot's billing changed in 2026. GitHub moved to usage-based "AI Credits" from June 1, 2026, and reports differ on which plans it covers, so check GitHub's billing page.

Claude Code pricing in 2026

Claude Code is not sold on its own. It comes with paid Claude plans, or you can pay for usage through the API.

  • Claude Pro: $20 a month, or about $17 on annual billing.
  • Claude Max: from $100 a month, with larger usage limits.
  • Team and Enterprise: per-seat plans with admin controls.

Usage limits reset on a rolling window, so heavy agent sessions use your allowance faster than chat does.

Working inside your editor

Copilot is built for the editor. Inline completions, chat and agent mode run inside VS Code, JetBrains and other IDEs.

Claude Code starts from a terminal or desktop app, so it fits developers who prefer to describe a task and review the result.

Edge: Copilot, for moment-to-moment typing help.

Delegating a whole task

Claude Code is designed around delegation. You describe an outcome, it plans the steps, edits files and runs commands, and you review the changes.

Copilot now has agent mode and a cloud agent that works on GitHub tasks, so the gap is narrower than it was.

Edge: Claude Code, for long multi-file work, with Copilot close behind.

Pull requests and the GitHub workflow

Copilot lives inside GitHub. It can review pull requests and take on tasks from your issues, which suits teams that run their process on GitHub.

Claude Code works with Git from the command line and fits into any workflow, but it is not built into GitHub.

Edge: Copilot, for teams that live on GitHub.

Models and flexibility

Copilot lets you choose between models from several vendors, depending on your plan. Reports say Claude is also available as a coding agent on Pro+ and Enterprise.

Claude Code uses Claude models only.

Edge: Copilot for choice, Claude Code for depth with one model family.

Customising the agent

Claude Code is easy to extend. You can add skills, connect tools through MCP servers and set project instructions, so the agent follows your team's process.

Many skills in our directory are written for this style of agent. See the best Claude Code skills.

Edge: Claude Code, for customisation.

Using both together

You do not have to pick one. A common setup uses Copilot for completions and in-editor chat, and Claude Code for bigger tasks.

  • Typing and quick fixes: Copilot in your editor.
  • Refactors and multi-file features: Claude Code in a terminal.
  • Review: Copilot on the pull request, plus a second look with Claude Code.

Which should you choose?

  • Student or hobbyist on a budget: Copilot Free or Pro.
  • Professional developer in an IDE: Copilot Pro, and add Claude if you want a delegating agent.
  • You prefer terminals or work on large codebases: Claude Code.
  • Team on GitHub with compliance needs: Copilot Business or Enterprise.
  • Heavy agent use all day: compare Claude Max and Copilot Max on your own usage.

Skills that help with either tool

A good routine matters more than the tool. These skills give an agent a repeatable process.

Frequently asked questions

Is Claude Code better than GitHub Copilot?

Neither is better for everyone. Copilot is stronger for in-editor help and GitHub integration, and Claude Code is stronger for delegating whole tasks.

Can I use Claude inside GitHub Copilot?

Yes. Copilot includes Claude models in its model picker on supported plans. That is different from running Claude Code, which is Anthropic's own agent.

Is Claude Code free?

No. It needs a paid Claude plan such as Pro, or API usage. GitHub Copilot has a limited free plan.

Which is cheaper, Claude Code or GitHub Copilot?

Copilot Pro costs $10 a month and Claude Pro costs $20. Claude Pro also includes chat and other Claude features, and heavy agent use can push both tools toward $100 a month.

Do I need both?

Not usually. Start with the one that matches how you work. Add the other only if you hit a limit you can name.

Methodology and disclosure

Pricing and plan details were checked in November 2026 from vendor information and independent pricing trackers. Sources disagree on how Copilot's June 2026 billing change applies to each plan, and we say so.
