Gemini vs ChatGPT Image Generation (2026): Efficiency Research Report

Key finding: ChatGPT's image models lead independent quality rankings, while Gemini's Nano Banana models are faster and cheaper at list API prices.

Efficiency depends on your mix of quality, speed and volume, and the gap narrows when you pick OpenAI's cheaper quality tiers.

This report compares Google's Gemini image models (Nano Banana) with OpenAI's ChatGPT image models (GPT Image) on efficiency. We define efficiency as quality per dollar, per second and per retry.

We did not generate images ourselves. The report synthesises independent benchmarks, vendor pricing and third-party reporting, with the source and date given for every number.

Key findings

  • Quality: GPT Image 2 led Artificial Analysis's text-to-image ranking in an August 2026 snapshot, and led editing rankings by a wider margin.
  • Cost: at list API prices, Nano Banana 2 Lite, Nano Banana 2 and Nano Banana Pro cost $34, $67 and $134 per 1,000 images, against $211 for GPT Image 2 on its high setting.
  • Cheaper OpenAI tiers: GPT Image 2 on medium works out to about $50 per 1,000 images, which undercuts Nano Banana 2.
  • Speed: Nano Banana 2 takes roughly 3 to 6 seconds per image, and Lite about 4, while GPT Image 2 can take much longer on thinking modes.
  • Newer models: OpenAI's GPT Image 2.5 (September 2026) claims large latency cuts, and independent numbers for it were not yet readable.

How we measured efficiency

Efficiency has three parts, and we report each separately.

  • Quality: blind human preference scores (Elo) from Artificial Analysis and Arena.
  • Cost: list API price per 1,000 images at 1,024 × 1,024 pixels.
  • Speed: generation time per image, from vendor figures and third-party reports.

We then show how retries change the real cost, because an image you have to regenerate costs twice.

Quality: what independent rankings show

Arena-style rankings show humans choosing between two images made from the same prompt. A higher Elo means the model wins more often.

SnapshotGPT ImageNano Banana
Artificial Analysis text-to-image, August 20, 2026GPT Image 2 (high): 1,369, rank 1Nano Banana 2: 1,320, rank 3
Arena.ai text-to-image, February 2026 (Nano Banana 2 launch)GPT Image 1.5: 1,248Nano Banana 2: 1,280, rank 1
Arena image editing, verified August 15, 2026GPT Image 2: 1,463Nano Banana Pro: 1,389

A gap of 49 Elo points means the higher model is preferred in roughly 57 of 100 blind comparisons. The 74-point editing gap means roughly 60 of 100.

Caution: Elo values are not comparable across dates. When we opened Artificial Analysis's GPT Image 2 page in November, it listed the model at 1,186, against 1,339 in June, because the scale was re-based.

Cost: list prices per 1,000 images

OpenAI's price depends on the quality setting you choose, from about half a cent per image on low quality to about 21 cents on high. GPT Image 2.5 pricing was not confirmed in the sources we could verify.

What 10,000 images a month would cost:

OpenAI says Images 2.5 cuts latency by up to 50% against its predecessor. These are vendor and third-party figures, not our own measurements.

Editing, text and consistency

Both families handle text in images far better than earlier models. They differ in emphasis.

CapabilityChatGPT (GPT Image)Gemini (Nano Banana)
Editing precisionLeads editing rankingsStrong, with search-grounded understanding
Text in imagesAbout 99% accuracy claimed by the vendorUnder 10% error on single-line text reported for Pro

The accuracy figures are vendor claims or third-party tests, so treat them as directional.

Plans and daily limits

Both services offer a small free tier and a $20 plan. ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month, and Google AI Pro costs about $20 a month and unlocks higher Gemini limits and Nano Banana Pro.

Free limits are small and change often. One 2026 review reported roughly two Nano Banana images a day on Gemini's free tier, and ChatGPT's free tier is similarly capped.

Efficiency in practice: the retry effect

A cheap image you must regenerate is not cheap. Cost per usable image equals the price divided by how often the first try is usable.

Illustration (hypothetical numbers, not measured data):

ModelPriceFirst-try successCost per usable image
Model A$0.06760%$0.112
Model B$0.21185%$0.248
Model C$0.05070%$0.071

Time works the same way. At 4 seconds and 1.6 attempts you wait 6.4 seconds, and at 20 seconds and 1.2 attempts you wait 24.

So measure your own first-try success rate before you judge a model on price.

Not everyone agrees

Rankings and reviewers do not always match. One editorial team that uses both families says it still prefers Nano Banana Pro for image quality and prompt reliability over both Nano Banana 2 and GPT Image 2.

Human-preference benchmarks also depend on the prompts used. A model can win on average and still lose on your kind of image.

How to run your own efficiency test

A 30-minute test beats a leaderboard.

  1. Write 20 prompts that match the images you actually make.
  2. Run each prompt on both tools at the setting you would really use.
  3. Record seconds per image and how many attempts gave a usable result.
  4. Divide the cost by the usable images.
  5. Pick the tool with the lowest cost per usable image that meets your quality bar.

Limitations of this report

  • We did not generate or judge images ourselves.
  • Elo scores shift between snapshots and are not comparable across dates.
  • Several figures are vendor claims or third-party reports.
  • GPT Image 2.5 results and pricing were not yet verifiable.
  • Prices and limits change often, so confirm before you budget.

Skills for better image prompts
